This year, US health system performance continued to fall short. When comparing 42 national performance rates with domestic and international benchmarks, the US achieved a score of 64 out of a possible 100. It was also found that the US had the highest rate of pre-mature hospital deaths. Overall, the US failed to improve: costs rose, access to care decreased dramatically and healthcare efficiencies continued to be low. The affordable care act aims to identify and decrease the gaps identified in this scorecard.
